How do I participate during a sound therapy session?
For general sessions, it’s pretty simple. Some key things to keep in mind as you are lying or sitting in a chair for your session.
1) Keep an awareness on your breath. Make sure you are taking deep belly breaths as you feel the need throughout the session. The sense of needing to take a deep breath is a sign of energy needing to move. It also helps with relaxation.
2) Set, affirm, and hold your intention for the session if you have one.
3) Follow the practitioner’s guidance through any guided segments or meditations.
4) Focus on the sounds of the instruments being played. Visualize the sound frequencies interacting with your body. They are invisible but they are there. If you get distracted by any interior or exterior noises, use my “Recognize/Release/Refocus/Relax” method to return from the distraction.
5) Don’t be stoic or completely still as you are sitting or lying down. Doing so could become uncomfortable. Continue to move and shift throughout the session to keep yourself comfortable.
6) Place your arms and hands in a comfortable position. Your palms may be placed in an upward receiving position or faced down in a grounding position. Your eyes can be opened or closed. Most people close their eyes as they relax. Wearing an eye mask is also an option.
7) If you are ever in any physical discomfort, let your practitioner know so adjustments can be made. Also speak up if you need a drink of water, need a tissue or a blanket or even need to use the restroom. Being comfortable is important for you to relax.
8) You may find yourself drifting off into a light or deep sleep. This is normal so enjoy the rest!
9) You may find your mind wandering into a mysterious story, profound thoughts may come your way, and you may even begin to see colors, shapes and images which is all pretty cool! Again, this is totally normal. Enjoy!
10) And most importantly — RELAX! Your practitioner is holding space for you in a safe and comfortable setting.
How do I participate in a sound therapy session if I want to go further and work on improving a physical or emotional discomfort?
In addition to following the participatory guidance of a regular session previously mentioned, consider the following as a method for addressing physical ailments, matters of heart, mind, and spirit.
When you participate in a sound therapy session to work on something specific, you DO just that! YOU PARTICIPATE! You are being mindful of your breath. You are taking notice or observing how your body is feeling, what it is you are experiencing, noticing any sensations felt from the vibrating instruments and sound waves. You are mindfully using this time to transcend from any negative emotional or physical feeling to a place of higher frequency. To a place of what you want to feel, to a place for how you will feel.
In your mind envision that you are alchemizing the undesirable to a desired state of being. You are processing or working through any discomfort to a place of pleasure or joy. Always focusing and progressing towards the positive state for the matter you are focused on transitioning, and you are using the sound as a catalyst to help shift into that uplifting state of being.
You are taking this time to align to your highest and best leaving all the “old” behind and welcoming in the “new”. This is a great time to align with the one true universal Devine. You may be meditating or praying quietly seeking and requesting guidance and insights.
The tones played in a therapeutic way help your mind and body to relax so you may go deeper and deeper into that meditative state while you consciously or subconsciously work on shifting a particular feeling or emotion. You move beyond the discomfort and just allow to be what is. You are looking for insights which may come immediately or any time after a session. As your sound practitioner, I hold that safe space for you to participate in this process which is totally up to you to achieve. Only YOU can make a shift happen.
Over time with active participation, you may find that your perception to past experiences shift allowing for a transformation to begin. The transformation is the magical key to help restore oneself to wholeness and feeling joy once again.
Each session builds up on the last and participating in weekly/bi-weekly sessions, and by working with your sound practitioner holding an intention on a specific matter, one oftentimes finds the magic has already materialized before you even know what happened. To work even further, ask your sound practitioner about additional sounding techniques that may be done together or in the privacy of your own comfortable and safe space.
How might sound therapy sessions aid with processing through grief?
Playing music, singing, and chanting are wonderful ways for expressing emotions carrying us through moments of joy and excitement or by enriching our moments of prayer and meditation. Doing the same may also be beneficial for working through release of grief, heartache, and discomforting emotions.
When working with disheartened states of being, utilizing sound may help to create a mental or emotional shift to a place where you may begin to feel a separation between your mind and your true beautiful self.
As your mind may be locking you into places such as sorrow, despair, or grief, sound allows for you a place to put your energy when life gets a little tough. There are waves of emotions that we all must ride throughout our lives and sometimes those waves take us away to far away places. Occasionally, we may find returning our way back home, to our true selves, to be extremely difficult even when our mind may be telling us that we are on the wrong path and that we must turn around immediately. Our true selves know what is best for us, but we can simply find ourselves being stuck in the wrong direction without any means to make that much needed and necessary U-turn.
When you are stuck, it can be nearly impossible to find the courage to return especially when you are alone and hurting. Sound can help you lean into that courage in the face of your darkened moments and be used as that catalyst for allowing a little light to shine through revealing that new path gently guiding you back home. Using sound can help reveal the path for returning to a state of wholeness, bringing clarity to the mind, and for returning to a beautiful new self.
Sometimes all you might need is a little bit of mental space to help relax the mind and body from the emotional trauma, helping you to begin the transformational process. Using sound, especially sound played in a therapeutic way by an empathetic practitioner, really is a beautiful way to help free the mind of limiting beliefs, self-sabotaging behaviors and to help reveal those “Ah ha” moments of clarity.
Grief really does need to be processed to help one move forward. Let your sound practitioner know if you will be using your session time to do just that so that the tones used during session can be tailored to your specific needs, as well as provide you with some helpful sounding techniques for you to use on your own.

Release the grief; do not stay within it for it will embrace you forever. ~KVD
