Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D., oncologist and author on alternative treatments, was a pioneer combining conventional and complementary treatments. Not only did he focus on curing a patient (fixing a physical symptom) using conventional methods, he also focused on healing his patients, which he described as a complementary union of mind, body and spirit.
As an integrative oncologist, Dr. Gaynor implemented sound and music therapy as a part of his patients’ treatment protocol for over 25 years. What he found was that music and sound healing made his patients feel more relaxed, and they experienced a new found sense of harmony and inner peace that lasted long after completing cancer treatments.
In his book, The Healing Power of Sound, he shows how sound and music can be an important part of a comprehensive program that everyone can use to create a healthy mind, body, and spirit. As a therapeutic modality, healing sound balances the body’s systems to promote health, not disease.
An adjunct therapy to conventional cancer treatments, music was an integral part of Dr. Gaynor’s practice so much so that he developed specially composed music using quartz crystal called Crystal Sonic™ acoustics.
Dr. Gaynor unfortunately is no longer with us but has left an astounding legacy. Not only did he identify modalities such as sound therapy, nutrition, meditation, biofeedback, yoga and chant as beneficial complementary medicine, but he embraced them as an indispensable component for treating serious illness. Fortunately, he has written several books and shared much information which is still available for everyone to learn from today.

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor (1956 – 2015) was the Founder and President of Gaynor Integrative Oncology and Clinical Assistant, Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College, affiliated with Cornell University and New York Hospital. He has held the position of Director of Medical Oncology at The Strang Cancer Prevention Center where he served as a consultant. He was also the former Medical Director and Director of Medical Oncology at the Weill-Cornell Medical Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine. He has served on the Executive Review Panel at the Department of Defense – Alternative Medicine for Breast Cancer Sector and the Smithsonian Institute’s Symposium on New Frontier in Breast Cancer and the Environment. He was a frequent speaker and lecturer at hospitals, conferences and universities throughout America and abroad.
